Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, and also called porous coordination polymers, PCPs) are porous, three dimensional materials comprised of metal cluster nodes and organic linker molecules. A variety of applications, such as gas storage, separation, molecular shuttling, and catalysis have been intensively studied using MOFs in the last decade. Their highly tunable repeating units and porous nature has been leveraged to develop versatile and functional materials. Indeed, it is possible to introduce variety organic functional groups into the MOF pore through pre-synthetic or post-synthetic methods. The physical and chemical properties of MOFs could be controlled and tuned by organic functional groups and transformations in a solid state.

In this presentation, our recent studies on organic functionalization and reactions of MOF including their advantages and limitations will be discussed. Various amine functional groups were installed in the MOF pore and applied selective molecular adsorption. In addition, introducing two functional groups in regio-selective manners will be discussed. The basic properties of MOFs were totally altered by controlling the functional group positions. New regioisomeric benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acids (BDCs) have been synthesized and fully characterized using 4 different organic functional groups such as amino, chloro, methoxy, and nitro. All new ligands were successfully incorporated into DMOFs (dabco MOFs) frameworks, and intensively studied for flexibility of the frameworks. It was found that the particular combination of functional groups (e.g., NH2-Cl, NH2-OMe, (OMe)2) showed the flexible DMOF frameworks evidenced by power X-ray diffraction (PXRD), N2 full isotherm, and selective CO2 adsorption.1-3 The detail investigation of regioisomerism of MOFs will be presented. In addition, the ease installation of multiple functional groups in a single MOFs and the application of multi-functional MOFs for molecular separation will also be discussed.4,5
