Systems-Level Molecular Engineering of Viruses for Biomedical Applications

While many viruses are linked to diseases that adversely impact the health of human, animal and plant hosts, viruses could also help promote wellness and treat disease if their "good traits" could be harnessed.  Systems-level molecular engineering of viral genomes provides efficient ways not only to explore viral gene regulatory mechanisms at a genomic level, but also to generate useful recombinant viruses that may serve as gene delivery vehicles, oncolytic (tumor-killing) agents and vaccines.  In this presentation, I will introduce important examples of biomedical application where such engineered viruses are being used: site-specific manipulations of human genome for therapeutic purposes, fate control of neural stem cells, and genome-design based development of intelligent viral vaccine platforms.
